China bolsters influence in Central Asia through economic and educational initiatives

A recent article in Xinhua highlighted China’s active role in the 5th World Media Summit, organized in Guangzhou and Kunming Provinces from December 2 to 8, 2023, focusing on promoting media contacts in line with the “One Belt, One Road” initiative—a testament to China’s commitment to regional engagement.

China’s concerted efforts to fortify its influence in Central Asia have become increasingly apparent through economic collaborations and soft power strategies. Utilizing tools like economic cooperation, media outreach, and educational programs, China is reinforcing ties across the region.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xiao and Consul General Jiang Wei seized the occasion during the workshop’s unveiling to engage with Kazakhstani officials, particularly meeting with East Kazakhstan Oblast Akim Ermek Kosherbayev. Their discussions revolved around potential cross-border collaborations in sectors such as tourism, healthcare, agriculture, and warehousing facilities, although specific agreements were not disclosed.

This proactive outreach aligned with a meeting between Ambassador Xiao and Kazakh President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev on December 5, underscoring Kazakhstan’s aspirations to strengthen collaboration with China across various domains. Tokayev’s office highlighted a mutual interest in expanding trade relations, fostering agricultural advancements, and developing sectors like beekeeping and deer breeding.

China’s multifaceted approach spanning economic partnerships and soft diplomacy initiatives demonstrates its strategic intent to deepen ties and exert influence in Central Asia, notably in Kazakhstan, fostering collaborative ventures across diverse sectors.
