Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan discuss Kambarata energy project

Representatives of the energy ministries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan recently discussed the implementation of the roadmap on the joint energy project signed in early January 2023.

Within the meeting, the officials of the three Central Asian countries exchanged views on the construction of Kambarata hydropower plant-1 (HPP-1), which was the key topic of the discussion, and discussed the draft document on the basic principles of their cooperation.

The officials also discussed the water and energy issues in the region, debated on the matter of rational use of water resources, and on the opportunities for electric energy exports to Kyrgyzstan via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan’s grid systems.

One of the subjects of discussion between the representatives of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan was the protection of the Toktokul reservoir during the summer irrigation period and they exchanged views on the measures that can and should be taken with regard to that issue.

Back in January, Astana, Bishkek, and Tashkent signed a plan for the joint construction of the Kambarata HPP-1 which, in addition to providing energy, stabilizing the region’s water provision and strengthening the water security of the signatory countries of Central Asia, is expected to become a cornerstone of Kyrgyz energy security.

Kambarata HPP-1 will be the largest power plant in Kyrgyzstan.

The Kazakh Energy Ministry previously informed that the Energy Ministers of the three countries – Bolat Akchulakov of Kazakhstan, Taalaibek Ibrayev of Kyrgyzstan, and Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov of Uzbekistan – signed on January 6 in the Kyrgyz capital the roadmap for implementation of the project “Construction of Kambarata HPP-1.”

The roadmap outlined the main conditions of the project’s realization and the needed steps to timely commission the hydroelectric power plant all parties agreed on.

Astana joined the project in May 2022 during the official visit of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Kyrgyzstan.
