More than a million individuals have entered Slovakia since the conflict in Ukraine began, a new report from UNHCR states. About 80% are women and children, but there are also older people, persons with disabilities, and those in need of immediate medical attention.
The UNHCR’s multifaceted approach to the refugee crisis focuses on protection, accommodations, receiving conditions, socioeconomic inclusion, and financial support for the most vulnerable populations.
In order to inform refugees on their rights and the resources that are available to them, as well as to identify vulnerable refugees and direct them toward appropriate services, UNHCR and its partners are present at border crossing points and other places where refugees receive assistance.
The four sites where Slovakia’s border with Ukraine is crossed by migrants fleeing fighting in 2022 were significant. The majority were women and children, along with older individuals, those with disabilities, and those in need of immediate medical attention.
Although the initial influx has calmed, the unstable security situation in Ukraine raises the likelihood of a future influx of migrants into Slovakia. Many new arrivals have been traumatized and distressed by the fighting, need mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS).
In addition to processing new arrivals and offering information on temporary protection and asylum, border authorities also provide onward transportation for individuals wishing to travel to urban areas.
At every border crossing point, UNHCR and partner staff members inform refugees about the resources they can access, including as housing, food, employment prospects, and healthcare. Over a million people had crossed the border from Ukraine into Slovakia as of December 31. Of those who had asked for temporary protection, many had left for other European nations.
Authorities at the national, district, and municipal levels reacted to the inflow quickly. For individuals staying in Slovakia for brief durations, the Fire Rescue Service, Border and Foreigners Police, and temporary hosting facilities have been set up.
