In order to meet the local families who have accepted Ukrainian migrants, Ambassador Bruce Edwards traveled to Moldova to meet with CRS Moldova, a partner organization of Caritas Australia, a press release states.
In the largest European exodus in decades, approximately 7 million Ukrainians have been compelled to escape their homes since February of this year. Despite being one of the poorest in Europe, the tiny nation of Moldova is now home to almost 90,000 Ukrainian refugees. In order to assist Moldovan families in hosting Ukrainian refugees, Caritas Australia has been collaborating with our partner Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in that country.
In addition to visiting the houses of numerous Moldovans who had hosted Ukrainians in their homes, Ambassador Edwards met with CRS Moldova staff to learn more about the initiative.
Families escaping the crisis in Ukraine can find long-term, safe housing in Moldova with the aid of the CRS Moldova Safe and Dignified Accommodation initiative. As part of the initiative, host families that are hosting Ukrainian refugees in their homes receive financial assistance.
Over 10,000 Ukrainian refugees are currently living in safe, respectable temporary housing as a result of the program, which has reached 1,600 Moldovan houses and provided them with incentives for hosting migrants.
According to Federico Rota, Head of Programs at CRS, the vast majority of the refugee families from Ukraine are actually residing in host communities.
In addition to providing accommodation and food for all of these people, Rota emphasized that they also need to figure out how to shield those who are already at risk from exploitation or even trafficking.
The program for Safe and Dignified Accommodation offers a special technique to aid in preventing these problems. It makes use of housing choices that might otherwise be unavailable to refugees without connections or language in the area.
They also cover expenses such as paying for some families’ transportation so they can relocate farther into Europe, in addition to supplying food, hygiene products, school supplies, and other necessities. Therefore, this financial help focuses on offering assistance that is both customized and adaptable.
