More than 60 million euros have been allocated to 25 water-related projects in Kyrgyzstan by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Trend reports.
The EBRD claims that the country’s infrastructure for water delivery and water treatment has been impacted by a lack of investment.
The bank said that the COVID-19 outbreak highlighted that access to clean water and improved sanitation are extremely crucial. Additionally, because climate-related disasters occur so often, Kyrgyzstan is extremely exposed to climate threats.
In recognition of the significance of a reliable and secure water supply in Kyrgyzstan, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and its major allies, including the EU and Switzerland, promote such initiatives nationwide.
Since 2009, the EBRD has been involved in the water sector of Kyrgyzstan, implementing 25 projects in 21 cities around the nation and securing an extra $93.6 million in grant co-financing from donors like the EU, Switzerland, The Investment Facility for Central Asia (IFCA), and others.
Hundreds of thousands of people in various Kyrgyzstan regions now regularly have access to clean drinking water and sanitation services thanks to funding from the EBRD and other donors.
Furthermore, the EBRD and Kyrgyzstan have been working together since 1992. The bank has contributed a total of 940 million euros to the implementation of 213 projects around the nation.
