Despite ongoing war, Ukraine harvests and exports most of its wheat

Ukraine is moving forward with plans to export its whole grain harvest in 2023, despite ongoing challenges from Russian attacks on ports and vital infrastructure. This is a testament to the country’s resiliency and determination.

In the midst of this geopolitical unrest, the agricultural sector—which is the foundation of the Ukrainian economy—is proving to be a pillar of strength.

Reuters reports, citing Ukrainian government data, that the country “harvested about 80 million tons of grain and oilseeds in 2023, including an exportable surplus of about 50 million tons in the 2023/24 July-June season.”

The assaults on Ukrainian ports, important alternative routes, and infrastructure have posed significant challenges. To ensure the timely export of grain, Ukrainian authorities are putting backup plans and routes into place. One of the most important factors in maintaining the nation’s economic stability in the face of outside pressures is the agricultural sector’s resilience.

At the same time, we are witnessing how Ukrainian wheat exports are being protested in Poland. The New York Times cites Polish farmers who say “an influx of Ukrainian products…is crowding the Polish market and undercutting their livelihood.”

Known as the “breadbasket of Europe,” Ukraine has become a strong rival for farmers in the European Union (EU) due to a variety of distinctive characteristics that have helped it succeed in the international agricultural market.

Ukrainian farmers have proven to be resilient and innovative in the face of adversity and inequality, which has allowed them to carve out a sizable niche in global markets.
