Xi backs Putin on security, wants progress on gas pipeline

During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his support for Russia’s sovereignty, highlighting the two nations’ shared commitment to enhancing bilateral relationships, Reuters reports.

The meeting centered around key interests of the two countries with a focus on agricultural and energy security. They also addressed the Sino-Russian gas pipeline project, committing to accelerate its progress.

Noteworthy was Putin’s participation in Xi’s Belt and Road Initiative Forum, which coincided with an international arrest warrant issued against him on charges of alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Regardless of this, Xi promoted his initiative as a viable alternative to the currently popular and prevailing US-led world order, receiving Putin’s endorsement.

Additionally, the two leaders discussed the Israel-Palestine conflict, exploring paths for cooperation that would promote peace and stability in the region.

China also conveyed its support for Russia to host the BRICS summit in 2024, further showcasing the two nations’ support of one another in international forums.

The meeting highlighted the enduring Sino-Russian relationship and the shared commitment to addressing global issues, despite external challenges.
