Blinken applauds OSCE’s resilience in the face of Russian obstructionism

Washington, D.C. (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) for its steadfastness and dedication in countering Russian obstructionism during a meeting held on July 24, 2023. Speaking alongside OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid in Washington, D.C., Blinken emphasized the crucial role of the OSCE in persisting with its work and missions despite challenges posed by Russia.

“It’s vitally important that the OSCE be able to continue all of its work and all of its missions. Unfortunately, it’s been on the receiving end of considerable obstructionism from Russia in trying to prevent it from moving forward. But despite that, thanks to the very good work of the Secretary General and the team, it has found ways to continue to do its work, and it’s vital that that remains the case,” Blinken stated.

The OSCE, an international organization comprising the United States, Russia, and several European, Central Asian, and North American countries, has faced criticism from Russia over alleged information-sharing with Western and Ukrainian intelligence regarding the location of Russian and pro-Russian forces. Moreover, Russia has exercised its veto power within the OSCE to delay decisions and withhold payments to the body.

Secretary General Schmid stressed the importance of collective efforts to address the diverse security challenges confronting the OSCE. She reiterated the organization’s unwavering support for Ukraine and Moldova, as well as its endeavors in combatting climate change and human trafficking.

The meeting underscored the necessity for unified international backing for Ukraine in the aftermath of Russian aggression and demonstrated the OSCE’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and cooperation across its member states.
