ICRC office in Donetsk hit by shelling

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Donetsk was shelled, resulting in damage to the structure and a number of vehicles, a press release writes.

No ICRC employees died or were hurt.

The shell was the third occurrence in recent days to have an impact on the larger Red Cross family. It fell in the yard of the ICRC office in Donetsk late on Monday. ICRC-supported hospital in Donetsk was struck once more on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two patients and numerous injuries. During shelling in Kherson last week, a volunteer with the Ukrainian Red Cross emergency response team was killed.

The ICRC strongly condemns how the hostilities have harmed our organization and demands for the protection of the humanitarian space, which is necessary for neutral and impartial actors to provide aid to those affected by the international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Attacks on Red Cross facilities serve as a stark reminder of the misery endured by people when powerful explosive weapons are used in populated areas; hundreds of them have been killed and injured in the battle.

Parties are required by international humanitarian law to take all reasonable measures to prevent injuring civilians and damage civilian property, including humanitarian facilities. Humanitarian aid workers, medical units, and their personnel must all be appreciated and safeguarded.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is in continual communication with the parties to the international armed conflict to remind them of their responsibilities under international humanitarian law.
