COP27 presidency launches Sharm-El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda

The COP27 Presidency today announced the Sharm-El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda as part of the collaboration with the High-Level Champions in response to the catastrophic impact of climate change that is hurting disadvantaged people all over the globe.

The Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda lists 30 Adaptation Outcomes that, by 2030, will help 4 billion people who reside in the most vulnerable communities to climate change become more resilient. Each result offers global solutions that can be implemented locally to address specific climate contexts, needs, and risks as well as deliver the system transformation necessary to safeguard vulnerable communities from the growing range of “climate hazards, such as extreme heat, drought, flooding, or extreme weather,” COP27 says in the press release.

According to estimates released in the IPCC AR6 WG II Report, even in a future with a 1.5-degree temperature increase, about half of the world’s population will be in serious danger of climate change consequences by 2030.

The Agenda highlights the necessity of implementing locally-led adaptation principles, creating visible and approachable climate threats, and counting with evidence-based, practical adaption strategies for all players.

The Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda with Global 2030 Adaptation Outcome Targets includes climate-resilient, sustainable agriculture that boosts yields by 17% and decreases farm-level greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 21% without expanding the agricultural frontier.

Other goals include halving per capita food waste (compared to 2019), lowering the proportion of lost food production in half, reaching 15% of the global meat and fish market with healthy alternative proteins, and tripling the consumption of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and legumes worldwide.
