Kazakh president names Olzhas Bektenov as new prime minister

Kazakh President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev swiftly appointed Olzhas Bektenov as the country’s new prime minister, following the government’s dismissal last week. The move came shortly after the ruling Amanat party nominated Bektenov for the position, a decision promptly ratified by lawmakers in parliament.

President Toqaev signed the decree formalizing Bektenov’s appointment on February 6, RFEFL reported, marking a significant shift in the nation’s leadership.

While no specific reasons were provided for the sudden change, President Toqaev has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the former government’s handling of economic challenges, including persistent inflation and infrastructure issues.

At 43 years old, Bektenov brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the head of the presidential administration since April of last year. Before that, he was chief of Kazakhstan’s Anti-Corruption Agency, a pivotal role he assumed following widespread anti-government protests in January 2022.

These protests, which shook the foundations of the government, led to significant political upheaval and weakened the influence of Toqaev’s predecessor, Nursultan Nazarbaev, and his inner circle.

The incoming prime minister replaces Alikhan Smaiylov, who led the government following the unrest in January 2022. The protests, which resulted in numerous fatalities, underscored the need for significant political and administrative changes in Kazakhstan, ultimately leading to the reshuffling of key government positions.
